Jaynell Mora, Public Relationships Coordinator 2019-2020
The Initial Letter
As I go forth into my last year at Ripon High School and my first year in Leadership, I reflected on my past three years and concluded that my initial thoughts of the upcoming year are to be as willing to participate as if I never experienced high school before. To be eager to make every memory count from the first day of school to the day I walk for graduation. For the most part, this year I'm alone as my closest friends have already graduated and have begun a new chapter of their life in college. High School can be a roller coaster of emotions as you're tested academically and socially, but it's taught me how to be self reliant. Although I miss walking down the halls or eating lunch with Kate Phelps, Julyssa Castellanos, Amelia Ruiz, and Estella Madrigal, them leaving opened up my mind to have a great year regardless. And that is what I plan to do. My hard work doesn't stop at the beginning of my lasts here at Ripon High. What I ultimately want to get out of Leadership is to have gained a greater perception of how a large machine like this program operates. I want my classmates to shape me to become a better leader and I want to return the favor.

Part I: Favorite Quotes
"Sí Se Puede!" - Cesar Chavez
"Sí se puede” is a term rooted in the struggle of working-class Latinos which translate to "Yes, it can be done." We honor the intent of its creators Dolores Huerta and Cesar Chavez, who have challenged us to create a better society, one that values and provides all its people with equal opportunity to succeed. Because of my Hispanic background and the fact we are a minority group battling stereotypes everyday, this quote holds specific value to my life. I personally don't face the extent of discrimination peers of my ethnicity do, but it stills affects my culture. Si se puede represents starting a movement against all odds because you can. Economic opportunities need to reach an equilibrium, all while embracing diversity. In current times, minorities are seen differently civilized but in reality anyone can have the same potential as you if you let them flourish.
"I've never learned a life lesson when I was doing well." - MannyMua
I encountered the quote watching Youtube video for entertainment about the makeup community and it just stuck with me. The reality resonated with me as you learn the best lessons after the worst has happened. You can compare the quotes on a small scale such as realizing you need to do your homework after a failing a class or to realizing how to cherish your loved ones after losing them. Either way, it took a bad experience or mistake to draw that conclusion. Learning to accept that can prove to be an everyday struggle as we emotionally, mentally and physical push ourselves but the lessons retracted are that valuable.
"Respect is only received once it's given."
I consider this quote as part of common sense. I truly try to live by this everyday as I interact with classmates, teachers, family and friends. I feel like you can’t be taken seriously until you take others seriously. Having mutually respect not only shows your good character but us the building block to build connections.

Part II: Quote
"Every time you have to speak, you are auditioning for leadership." -James Humes
This quote I think fairly describes my experience as a leader in the program, especially it being my first year. As I was reading through many quotes about leading crowds and carving new pathways, I couldn't relate to those. I came into this program to learn how to be a leader, a rookie. I expected to learn from others who are veterans or just more experienced than me. With that being so, every word I say, every action I commit reflects me as a leader. That's why I find this quote so important for first years like me, all the way to legacy leaders. There is always something to learn from someone else, there is always room to grow. Even Morty opening admits she is always searching for improvement because as a leader, you never stop advancing. This quote shows you just because you've made it to the highest position you can, if you stop 'auditioning for leadership' it can be taken from you. People watch and listen to you as leader and will hold you accountable for your decisions. Being aware that you have to keep your morals, values, work ethic, etc.. is part of the responsibility as a leader.

Part II: Goals
1)To be Mindful of "Self"
This one is still a work in progress because some days I am mindful of myself and others day I just let myself go. I am also actively seeking methods and activities that I enjoy and find healthy to my emotional and physical state. I surround myself only with people who care about me which is important. Although sometimes it can be lonely when those few people are busy.
2)Discover resources and skills applicable to other things(clubs) or the real world
One of the most useful skill I learned was learning how to make a resume and cover letter. I will definitely be using that as a resource when applying for future jobs. Practicing my public speaking skills will also impact me in the way too confidently hold myself in everyday life. Other small things I learned that I was able to use in the clubs I hold an officer position in is knowing how to fill out a Purchase Order form or a Cash Box form. This was very useful when my clubs wanted to hold their own activities.
3)Graduate high school with a 4.0 or above
I've done well in my classes so far with a cumulative 4.0 GPA currently. Trying to raise it back to a 4.08 before the end of the school year. So I'm definitely on track to graduate with at least a 4.0 GPA.
4)Be accepted to universities I applied at
I unfortunately got waitlisted at three UCs I applied to but I did get accepted into two, one being UC Irvine, which was a top choice of mine. I have to wait until June to find out which of the schools that waitlisted me will accept me but nevertheless if they don't I'm super excited to go to Irvine! Finding any way to continue my education is important to me so I realize getting accepted to every school I applied to isn't important since all the schools I applied to are great contenders.
5)Become a home owner
Although I am too young and still too poor to become a home owner I have been practicing methods of saving my money that could help me later on when I need to put money aside for my own house. Currently I put almost all of my paychecks in my savings account and limit the amount I spend. I'm also going to university in hopes of choosing a career that pays well so I am able to one day buy a home.
6)Confidently know I have a healthy relationship with my family(Mom)
This one is 50/50. My mom and I have had very effective talks since I made this goal in how to strengthen our relationship but we still argue very very often. It upsets me how stubborn we both can we but I know I can't wait for her to change everything I dislike about her without being willing to change myself too. In all honestly, my mom is the one who is making bigger strides to have a healthy relationship and I am grateful for that so now I have to return the favor. As for the rest of my family I cannot say the same. The other family members are all boys so they are significantly less approachable and understand when it comes to bonding. Hopefully that will change once we all get older and mature.

Part II: People Magazine Article
As a seventeen year old student about to graduate high school and head to college, Jaynell Mora starts to face the ongoing challenges of adulthood. As she begins her college application process while being involved in extracurriculars and having a job, she begins to realize the real world isn’t all too easy. “I’m finding it difficult to balance my school, work, and social life,” she exclaims to the People Magazine’s reporter.
Since early childhood, Jaynell has performed well in school because of her headstrong personality. However, in the process of maturing, she can’t rely on her academic success to take her much farther. Through involuntary discussions between her and her mom, Carmen, she is hit with the reality that she is going to be responsible for herself if she plans on moving to a university.
“You’re going to be away from home, alone at college,” her mom says. “No one is going to be telling what you need to do, so it’s time you start acting independent.” Carmen tries to illustrate the trouble Jaynell can save herself from if she knowingly implements changes in her life to cause mental development.
We can all tell Jaynell has had trouble with keeping an open mind by her sassy outbursts when things don’t go as planned. People around her believe she won’t set herself up for disappointment is she keeps in mind that “life happens” and you have to maneuver around it when the unexpected happens. Her fear of failure is what’s making it bothersome from it taking effect.
Jaynell finds so much truth and value in the quote “easier said than done,” because that sums of her life thus far. She can admit that she can get the stuff she amounts to done, but it’s the fact she doesn’t do it efficiently that weighs her down. She is undoubtedly a smart young woman, but the biggest pill for her to swallow is that she NEEDS to take her own advice. It’s through her close friends and peers that she noticed she has the ability to solve other problems, but not her own.
She knows it will be possible at the hand of hard work and honesty from the people that truly want her to prosper. According to Jaynell, it’s people like her mom who keeps her grounded and reminds her to be humble. “Adaptability is the key to success and happiness. I just need to anticipate how to get there,” Jaynell hopefully conveys.

Role Model
My role model has to be my dad. In terms of taking a different look at life, his perspective is something I admire. He’s always been an easy going guy, never finding a reason to be upset, even if he’s tired from a long day at work. You can ask anyone, when he talks, he is always laughing. I’m just appreciative that I can confidently say the first thought that comes to mind when thinking about my dad is happiness. His bubble personality makes me excited because he can ease my stress, even if just temporarily. He shows me no matter how much you think is going on, you have a reason to smile.

Inner Animal
My inner animal is a Chihuahua. As stated in the the movie Beverly Hills Chihuahua by Papi, you are "tiny but might." This quote means that no matter how small you think you are(not just physically), you are capable of big things. My tininess can be exemplified by the height of 5'1 or the way I self assess myself. My mightiness is determined through my character. When I get passionate about certain concepts or actions, there will be no limitations based of the idea of being "tiny." Chihuahua's can be seen as annoying by your average neighbor but their barking is my outspokenness. There are people who hate Chihuahua's and there are people(like me) who love them. Throughout my life, I know they are going to be people who either hate or love me, but it won't affect me because I will just keep barking. Another thing about Chihuahua's I can relate to is that they originated from Mexico, like my parents. I grew up having Chihuahua's as pets and seeing many others with them.

Ladders by Mac Miller
Somehow we gotta find a way No matter how many miles it takes I know it feels so good right now But it all comes fallin' down When the night meet the light Turn to day Can't stop, yeah, you won't stop I know just how that feel When you're on top, 'til the ball drop You've never seen it be so real It feels so good right now But it all comes fallin' down When the night meets the light Turn to day Feel it a little, feel it a lot I'm swimmin' a bit, but deeper in thought Keepin' my head on top of my shoulders Into some shit, I'm out of the box This the level I'm on Needin' it all right now when forever is gone Baby, the weather is strong Whether it's hot or cold I'm comin', knockin' on your door Well, I'ma, I'ma maintain, I'm stayin' so high Put the lighter all the way up 'til we touchin' the sky And you know you're dead wrong, you're in love with a lie All I, all I, all I wanna do is free your mind We don't see no lines, we don't color inside It's a very small world, we don't fuck with the size Yeah, see the bigger picture when it's beneficial Lovin' how I catch you blow the whistle when you run out of time Yeah, wakin' up I open up my, eyes Do you mind if I blow your, mind? A little closer, baby, don't be, shy Why you worried that it's gon' be, fine? I guess it's that kinda day It's really all I'm tryna say We don't have a lot of time to waste Somehow we gotta find a way Somehow we gotta find a way No matter how many miles it takes I know it feels so good right now But it all comes fallin' down When the night meet the light Turn to day I wouldn't wait forever Just shoot your shot We don't need no more, no extras We all we got Yeah, yeah All the lights flickerin', hittin' the right switches I'm livin' this life different and missin' the flight bullshittin' I had a plan to change, you can't stand the rain Little delay, but I came and you're cool with it I don't trip, flip or lose my grip And I don't know it all, but I do know this Before you know me, better know yourself I've been in this shit so long that it don't smell I burn the hotel to a castle Livin' like the king for a grand I don't do nothin' that's a hassle Besides, even that castle's made of sand Just might slip into the sea Fuck it all if it all ain't me Maybe we inside the maze Somehow we gotta find a way, okay Somehow we gotta find a way No matter how many miles it takes I know it feels so good right now But it all comes fallin' down When the night meet the light Turn to day I wouldn't wait forever Just shoot your shot We don't need no more, no extras We all we got |
There are most likely tons of other songs in out there that could describe me better but I wanted to choose a song from artists I already listen to. This way, the message of the song is taken more personally as I already respect the artist's music. Mac Miller uses his song Ladders as a metaphor about life. There is an increasing beautiful view the higher you climb. But along with the climb comes the fear of heights. Not to mention the higher you climb the higher the fall. But we still gotta find a way up. "Somehow we gotta find a way. No matter how many miles it takes." There's a strong sense of perseverance in this song as well as the reality that life holds difficult tasks. "We all we got," also references that at the end of the day you're the one who's going to be putting in the work to obtain your goals. So in the great scheme of things, we have to figure it out because life only always us so much time to reach the top.

Part I: What I Like Best About Being a Member of Leadership
One of my favorite memories about being in the program this year would have to be before the school year even started, at Core Camp. This is my first year into the program, along with many others. Sure I knew of members in the class, but I didn’t really know them. Core Camp gave me the opportunity to get to know some of my peers really well in a positive and fun manner. My favorite things to do were icebreakers and teamwork type of games. Looking back, those couple of days were just playfull before the stress of the school year hit.
All my ACE of the month interviews I scheduled with the nominated staff members has been a favorite memory for me as Public Relations Coordinator. These interviews have given me the chance to not only meet, but to highlight what amazing staff members we have on campus. All nominees so far have been so genuine hardworking people. Just because I personally don’t have that ACE as a teacher or interact with them daily, doesn't mean they aren’t impacting other students.
The DUDE be nice rally has got to be one of my favorite rallies, leadership and high school memory. I’ve loved LJ for as long as I have known him and to be apart of the secretive plans to surprise him as this years DUDE was the most heartwarming experience. It’s such a great feeling to return the favor to someone as nice, hardworking and funny as him. Being apart of the video made for him, giving ideas to tailor gifts to him, and helping set up the rally was so worth it after seeing his reaction. I’m just overall glad I had to opportunity to vote him as this years ACE while I’m still here at Ripon High. He’s one of those people you’ll miss when you’re off in college and find time to come back and visit.

Part II: A Reflection of a Peer in Leadership
Being in partnership with Kassidy as this year's Public Relations Coordinator has been quite a journey, especially since we were both unfamiliar with the job position. Luckily for me though, Kassidy has been in the program for the last 4 years so she had a pretty good idea how to tackle our responsibilities when I was clueless. Our first task together was to do inventory of the storage before the school year started. I had never seen the storage room before so I didn’t even know what we were looking for. She took the lead and showed me what should be there. Then when it came time to fill out a Purchase Order for the supplies we needed for stock off she filled it out but showed me how she did it. Now, because of her I’m able to fill out Purchase Orders on my own for more supplies or for club activities I help with. This has kinda been a cycle for our partnership this year. I don’t really know how to approach a new responsibility, she teaches me, and then I can do it on my own. I’m really appreciative of her input even if I don’t communicate it enough. She’s been a great mentor towards me and is how a leader should be.

Part I: What I love to do...
It's very difficult for me to find time to participate in hobbies but I partake in hiking and escape rooms. Although I haven't done these activities in too much frequency I've had so much fun when I have done them. I've gone hiking multiple times; first to Mission Peak, which is not a beginners hike, then to Knights Ferry and most recently Yosemite. Mission Peak and the Mist Trail on Yosemite were very challenging as those trails were very steep in elevation, making it hard to go up and down. Even though it's strenuous, there are rewarding factors to it. The fact that I can accomplish something that I wouldn't think I can physically do is the most rewarding part. Then the views hikes offer is the runner up. Sometimes you forget the beauty nature can offer when you're stuck in a suburban area of a small town so you're struck with awe when you're at the peak of the trail looking at everything around you. My other hobby is going to escape rooms! I've only been to two since there aren't many local but I eventually plan on going to all the ones I can find. The intricate designs and themes of escape room makes it a high intensity adventure. I personally love the aspect of discovering clues, solving puzzles, and accomplishing tasks under a time constraint. It really forces you to use your mind to think of every possible outcome because you aren't sure what you're heading into.

Part II: Letter to Parents
Dear Mama and Papa,
First off, I want to thank you for everything. Throughout my 17 years of living there has been many lessons you both and each have taught me. Most importantly, thank you for sacrificing your life to work hard for the betterment of our family. You guys left everything you knew in another country to hopefully one day make life easier for your children and you did exactly that. Thank you for inspiring me and making ME proud to have such diligent and strong people as parents. More specifically now; Ma, thank you for teaching me that life isn't going to work out the way I planned it and that's ok. And that being a perfectionist will only sabotage me because my expectations aren't realistic sometimes. As much as the truth sucks I'm glad I have you to be honest with me and help me prevent downfalls from happening. Pa, thank you for always being a ray of sunshine in my life. Talking to you have always been a way to ensure a smile from me. It's almost an escape from the world every time you made me laugh. And for both of you, I am privledged to know what hard work looks like in different forms whether it's taking care of my brothers and I, booking appointments for the business, physically repairing appliances, or doing insane yard work. I understand we still have our disagreements pretty often but we're able to address that our family is a work in progress as we get older and I develop my own thoughts and values but despite my overall sassy, teenage self, you put up with me and love me. Thank you for investing so much in shaping me into the person I am today. We are living the American Dream because of you two that I'll never be able to repay you enough for but I hope I make it worth it for you two.

Your True Legacy
General Advice
The Letter
a. Congratulations on being your class's Public Relations Coordinator! The first piece of advice I have to give is to not be afraid to ask for help whether it's from Morty, your partner, or a classmate. You want to be able to preform your job to the best of your ability so acquiring as much information as you can is only going to help. On top of that, if you have any questions, ask them as soon as you can. If you wait to ask for help it's most likely the job won't get done right. Examples of what you should be asking about if you don't already know about it are supplies in the storage room that you'll need to restock often, or how to fill out Purchase Order forms. Other things I recommend for you is to be spirited because you will be doing spirit counts. You'll also be in charge of grading social media assignments and instead of everyone texting you individually, making a group chat is so much easier to keep track of who completed the assignment. You're also in charge of the storage room through the WHOLE year, so I highly advise you to check on the room every once in a while because people are going to use the room and leave a mess, especially around Homecoming and Winterfest. Make it clear to the class that if they need to use the storage room that they are responsible for cleaning up after themselves or you'll be stuck cleaning up their mess. One of my favorite thing about this position was writing ACE of the Month articles but as voting opens you'll see not many people participate which is a bummer because it's awesome to be recognized by your peers. I've had this idea to create excitement around ACE of the Month, and that was you create a certificate for each monthly winner and/or award them a $5-$10 gift card of their choice just like how ACE ticket winners are given when Mr. Ramirez pulls tickets. I feel like many people don't care about ACE of the Month because they don't get anything out of it. So I really hope you and your partner can change the stigma around that!

Resumes
During the school year Morty had invited Caroline Hutto to discuss and inform the class about Resumes; how to make one, what information should be entailed, how they are ready etc. I found this very useful because I know that eventually in my adult life I will be applying to jobs with a resume. Mrs. Hutto first showed us resumes she has encountered as an Oral Surgeon as a real life example of the Dos and Dont's of resumes. This really helped in terms of visually seeing good and bad examples because employers typically look at a resume for less than 30 seconds. To save my potential poor execution of re explaining the notes she gave us I attached Mrs. Hutto's presentation that she shared with the class that she emailed to me after asking permission.

Public Speaking
Another big topic we covered in class was public speaking when Morty assigned each class member with speeches individually. I am not going into each specific thing we covered because I want to highlight what I believe is the most important aspect of public speaking that can be carried into almost every task to seek to accomplish; that is confidence. Whether you've built that confidence from practicing your speech over and over again or your "faking it until you make it" having confidence makes you ensure your presence and gives others a reason to listen to you. Allowing yourself to create and carry that positive mindset can make you confident in everyday life. Within the aspect go public speaking, it is having the right tone in your voice that tells others what you're saying is important. It is having good posture and keeping eye contact, which are all good traits to have when you'll eventually have to give another presentation in class, explain to an employer why they should hire you, speak of a topic at work, etc.

Change
So my reflection on the year as a leader in the class has a lot to do with this being my first time experiencing the class and the way it works. So through my perception that this is a esteemed program that I worked hard to be accepted into it was frustrating to me whenever I saw a classmate who's been in the program longer than I have, sometimes even and Elder, not take their position seriously or be disrespectful towards the program by the way they act in class. I feel like that could be an underlying issue of entitlement that appropriate behavior or core principles in the program does not apply to them because they are "safe" from forms of consequences or judgement. This mindset can lead to a lazy execution of job responsibilities and a lesser value of what it means to be a leader. In no way I mean to call others out over myself because I know I too have areas I can improve on but coming in as a first year it was disappointing to see how my peers behaved at times because I wasn't accepted into the program my freshman or sophomore year when I had the same work ethic or mannerisms as some classmates who have more experience than I did. Of course, there is always room for improvement and my suggestion would be to make the class aware that Leadership tends to create that mindset whether you are aware you have it or not. Reinstalling that idea that everyday you should work as hard as you did when you were trying to get in the program is important. The same way we talk about vulnerability through Brene Brown's book is a way we can be open to discuss the issue I mentioned.

The Ideal Leader
An ideal leader has the ability to delegate, strong communication skills, lots of self-confidence and a positive attitude. However, there is one thing that good and great leaders need to do if they want to become an ideal leader - keep on learning. Ideal leaders will always want to ask questions but never assume they know everything. They won’t be afraid to make mistakes either but will want feedback on how to improve in the future. More specifically in our own Leadership class, an ideal leader helps others succeed, is open to ideas other than their own, never misses a deadline, is trustworthy, and influences peers by leading through example. We are not leaders when we’re stubborn, late, unfocused, when we bring others down, rude or disrespectful.
